Understanding TMS
What is Deep TMS?
Transcranial magnetic stimulation uses brief magnetic pulses delivered through a coil placed near the scalp to stimulate brain circuits involved in mood. BrainsWay’s Deep TMS is a noninvasive treatment given while you are awake; it does not require anesthesia or surgery.
For depression, treatment generally involves a series of visits rather than a single session. A clinician first determines whether TMS is appropriate for you and reviews the treatment schedule and safety screening.
Why people consider it
Another evidence-based option.
- No surgery or anesthesia
- A treatment option for certain adults whose depression has not improved enough with medication
- Sessions take place in an outpatient setting
TMS can cause headache or scalp discomfort, and it is not right for everyone. Your clinician will review your medical history, including any metal implants or seizure risks, before treatment.
The evidence
FDA-cleared for certain adults with depression.
The U.S. Food and Drug Administration has cleared the BrainsWay Deep TMS system for depressive episodes in adults with major depressive disorder who have not had satisfactory improvement with a previous antidepressant medication in the current episode. “FDA-cleared” is the precise device term.
Clinical response
With Deep TMS, compared with 21.4% in the sham group.
Remission
With Deep TMS, compared with 14.6% in the sham group.
These results come from the study’s per-protocol group of adults with major depression who received the intended treatment course. “Response” means a meaningful reduction in symptoms; “remission” means symptoms improved to a low level on the study’s measure. They describe study participants, not a prediction or guarantee for any individual. Other studies and clinical settings may report different rates.
